Taleen’s Table
Simple Joinery in Furniture
5 weeks
Design Breakdown
The goal of this design was to create a piece of furniture that fits into the lifestyle of a young family with one or more young children. A simple design that is organic, tasteful and fits into the overall space of the families home but still represents a space for fun and learning for kids. It was also important to make the design timeless so that when the child grows up they are able to use it in a mature room.
Create a piece of furniture that caters to toddlers and is a familiar, functional, and easy to make and use piece of wooden furniture

Getting the Numbers Right
The Measure of Man and Woman was used in this project as a correction of measurements to ensure that the tables legs and base were the correct height.

Who
This piece is dedicated to my niece Taleen, an amazingly curious toddler whose natural spark of curiosity inspired my own
During the process, it was essential to make all the parts of this table fit into each other seamlessly. Most notably, Where the aprons meet the legs, and are slightly tucked inwards. As well as the fit of the cover to the top of the table. These small details are what pull together the timelessness of the design. Without the neat intersection of angles, the playful but put-together design of the table fails.

When it came down to the process and final materials used, it was important to stay on track with the overall theme of reusability and simplicity. Jointing and planing the rift sawn poplar pieces, then using the domino joiner to put together the pieces via Mortis and Tennon joinery. To finish, I almost stained the wood of this project, but realized the look of the natural poplar spoke for itself and decided to follow through with that line of reasoning and use beeswax to seal the wood.
